Mathematician Günter M. Ziegler, a professor at Freie Universität Berlin, has been awarded the 2017 Berliner Wissenschaftspreis by the Governing Mayor of Berlin. Ziegler received the award, which includes 40,000 euros, on Tuesday in a ceremony in Berlin's City Hall from the Governing Mayor of Berlin, Michael Müller, who is also the Berlin Senator for Science and Research. Müller, who is a member of the Social Democratic Party of Germany, praised Ziegler as an excellent mathematician and an impressive communicator. Ziegler said he felt mathematicians in Berlin have achieved a great deal in the past 25 years, and he was honored to accept the award in recognition of great mathematics in Berlin.

The Nachwuchspreis, worth 10,000 euros for an early career scholar, went to Ms. Myfanwy Evans, who holds a doctorate in mathematics and is currently based at the Institute of Mathematics, Technische Universität Berlin. She received the award in recognition of her research at the intersection of geometry and physics, in particular on geometric forms in nature. The Nachwuchspreis is intended to recognize innovative research approaches in a field that holds particular potential for Berlin’s scientific and economic future. The Wissenschaftspreis honors outstanding achievements in research in Berlin.
